Walk-in closets are often less efficient per square foot than a well-fitted reach-in, because a large share of the floor is circulation. Layout is what decides whether the space is working.
The clearances
Hanging clothes project about twenty-four inches. A walkway between two facing runs needs roughly three feet clear on top of that, so a double-sided walk-in wants around six and a half feet wall to wall at minimum.
Narrower than that and you are squeezing past clothes, which is how a walk-in ends up half used.
Layout by width
Under about six feet wide: single-sided, treat it as a deep reach-in. Six to eight feet: two facing runs. Wider than about ten feet: an island becomes possible and useful.
An island needs three feet of clearance all round, which is why it needs real width rather than just floor area.

Corners are the trap
Two runs meeting in a corner leave the rail ends colliding and a dead zone behind. Corner units, angled sections or simply stopping one run short all handle it.
Ignoring it is the most common walk-in design error and it wastes several feet of run.
Light and air
Poor lighting makes a closet feel smaller and makes dark clothing hard to distinguish. Lighting at the front of shelves rather than centred on the ceiling puts light where you are looking.
In Middle Tennessee humidity, a closet on an exterior wall with no air movement can develop musty smells and mildew. Ventilated shelving and leaving the door open help.
